How Nok Air Enhances Passenger Experience and Monetizes Inflight Services with Moment
Nok Air, Thailand’s low-cost airline, partners with Moment to enhance inflight services across its Boeing 737-800 fleet.
Founded in 2004, Nok Air is the low-cost subsidiary of Thai Airways. Based in Thailand, it operates flights from Bangkok and Chiang Mai to over 30 destinations across the country and neighboring countries.
As a prominent budget airline, Nok Air is committed to offering affordable fares without compromising on quality and passenger experience. With a young, digital-savvy customer base, the airline identified the need to modernize its inflight services and create new revenue opportunities.
The challenge
Balancing cost-efficiency with enhanced digital experiences
As a leading low-cost airline in Thailand, Nok Air needed to improve passenger experience without increasing operational complexity or costs. Several challenges had to be overcome:
- Offering entertainment at scale: meeting rising passenger expectations for engaging digital content while keeping systems lightweight and cost-effective.
- Adapting to a low-cost model: avoiding heavy installations and certification (STC) requirements that could slow down deployment.
- Monetizing inflight services: finding new ancillary revenue streams beyond ticketing, through onboard retail and advertising.
- Simplifying crew operations: providing tools to help cabin crew efficiently manage entertainment, orders, and stock during flights.
The Solution
Nok Air partnered with Moment to deploy the Flymingo Box across its fleet of 14 Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
The Flymingo Box is a wireless, battery-powered server that is easy to transport and quick to install (no STC required). Flexible and modular, it allows Nok Air to tailor its digital inflight service by adding features such as entertainment, e-commerce, surveys, or the inflight magazine.
Key features implemented:
- Mood entertainment platform: a pixel-perfect digital portal accessible from passengers’ own devices, featuring movies, TV shows, games, and more.
- Crew app: allows crew members to monitor the system, manage streaming during announcements, and track the Flymingo Box battery.
- Buy-On-Board (BOB) service: an integrated e-commerce feature enabling passengers to order food, duty-free, and services directly from their seat. Crew can easily open/close the shop, process orders, and track stock before/after the flight.
- AdServer: Nok Air can monetize digital advertising spaces within the IFE portal. With a dedicated management platform, the airline uploads ads, tracks performance, and optimizes campaigns through advanced analytics.
